And when I recently purchased Privateer, it always crashes on me if I try to enable the digitized sounds. I know people have gotten this to work for them. I am running SBOS v2.10 and have 1024K of DRAM. I have tried everything recommended by Gravis to make sure it works properly, but no such luck getting it to work with some programs. My next suspicion is some BIOS setup that might be causing the problem. If there is anyone out there that gets Wolfenstein 3-D to work and/or Privateer, could you please let me know any tricks that have helped you get it to work (I have already tried the -o options) or someone else you know. And if by chance you have an AMIBIOS, could you let me know what advanced setup options you are using. Subject: Concerning the 'Advertising' campaign Right. It would seem that the GUS advertising has been lackluster, with no change slated in the future. Why? Evidently Gravis thinks the stuff will sell all by itself. Too bad nobody else does. Even the easy parts of the software are a mess....consider the lame MIDI patches...gee, this bagpipe patch sounds like it was ripped from "Lemmings". Maybe somebody witha brain will sample, heaven forbid, a REAL bagpipe and use a well-known public-domain song like "Amazing Grace". This would leave every other card in the dust. Maybe a decent installation program... Also, the 'goodbye' screen does not appear and the thread sits there playing music and doing nothing. Minor complaint, I know. As far as the DOS settings, the game runs way too fast unless you change them enough to slow it down. If anybody is interested, I'll post... It's also well, placed, facing the editorial page, which is one of the most-read articles in the magazine. The ad mentions UltraSound's "Best Of Comdex Spring '93" award. Text follows: A big ole 3d "100%" with large letters centered in the middle of the page following saying "chose the natural sound of UltraSound" Main text: IN COMPARATIVE SOUND TESTS GRAVIS ULTRASOUND WAS UNANIMOUSLY CHOSEN OVER THE "BEST" FM-16 BIT SOUND CARD. [note: They're refering to the SB-16 ASP] We conducted the sound tests at CES and PC Expo and played it completely fair. The test was conducted with the same MIDI files, on the same computer, at the same time, and through exactly the same equipment. The result? To absolutely all who listened, UltraSound was overwhelmingly preferred. UltraSound received this vote of confidence because it is not just another sound card. Our card's revolutionary wavetable technology delivers full, natural sounding instruments and unmatched sound effects - not the artificially created sounds of FM sound cards. UltraSound is the next generation of sound technology. With its 16-bit, 44.1 kHz CD quality stereo sound, UltraSound is compatible with applications supporting Adlib, SoundBlaster, Windows 3.1, MPC, General Midi, and popular CD ROM titles. You have to experience the natural sound to believe it. Hear the difference with a sound performance at your Gravis dealer now! Or call Gravis for more information: 1-604-431-5020 1-604-431-5155 (fax) [end of advert] A few things: 1) Gravis MUST put a 1-800 number in the ad for potential customers to call. Media Vision, Orchid, Creative Labs, Media Magic, etc, etc, etc have 1-800 numbers for customers. Gravis should put theirs in the ad. 2) The PRICE! Guys, you are selling this card at a bargain price, yet the average consumer could easily think that this is a card in the price range of the Roland RAP-10 or Turtle Beach MultiSound. Price is one of the GUS' main selling points, take advantage of it. Good to see Gravis' presence in multimedia magazines as well as game-oriented magazines. - Dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Nov 1993 08:40:35 -0500 (EST) From: Phat H Tran Subject: GUS Memory Usage > Date: Sat, 30 Oct 93 21:24:07 +0400 > From: Lexy Bekhly > Subject: GUS with 1016K > > ...A weird scene inside the goldmine: > > PatchMan: "1016k of memory remains" when nothing loaded > That's normal. There's no reason to play load1024.mid outside of Windows. All it does is attempt to load all the patches for the ultra1024 MIDI Mapper setup to let the user use Windows apps that do not do patch caching. In DOS, you don't have the ultra1024 setup, so playmidi will just run out of GUS memory trying to play load1024.mid. > Every possible DRAM test: "OK, OK, OK, 1024!.." > The your memory should be Okay. > P.S. Another mystifying thing is that different programs > (patchman, session) appear to load different sets of patches > for the same load1024.mid... A Session's bug? No. Just make sure that your MIDI Mapper setup is ultrasound (for patch caching apps) and ultra1024 (for non-caching apps). Note that ultra1024 will map many instruments to one patch to save memory, and thus will not let you access the entire GM set. You should use the 'ultrasound' setup whenever you use Media Player, Session, Powerchords, Patch Man, WinJammer, etc. Phat. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Nov 1993 18:34 CST From: T4100076%twncu865.BITNET@pucc.Princeton.EDU Subject: GUS support list from Gravis Hi GUS Lovers!! We plan to release a public beta once we are satisfied that this part is stable. 3) Do NOT send in ANY MegaEm registrations 4) Yes, there are many other features and emulations we are looking at. Kind of like listening to a radio broadcast. I'm using cheap-o non-amplified speakers, but I hear the same popping when I listen through a fairly good set of Sony headphones. In particular, I've noticed this problem in Space Quest V (GREAT music and sound effects on the GUS!), and also in the 2nd Reality demo (when the multi-sided ball first appears..). It's not really a major problem, I suppose, but it's annoying. Midi files general play without the popping, and I haven't really tried my GUS with a wide variety of other software due to lack of time on my part. Does anyone out there have any idea what is wrong, if anything? Tommy. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Nov 93 17:59:06 EDT From: Thayer York Subject: Voyetra SPGold I know the majority of people here use the GUS for games (at least it seems that way), but has anyone figured out a way to get a DOS-based MIDI sequencing program (such as Voyetra's SPGold) to use the synthesizer on board the GUS? +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ ** * * ***** * *** * Osborn's Law: +================+* Variables won't; constants aren't * | Thayer York | | aka Torq, |* yt50@lafayacs.bitnet *| YakToes | -OR- +================+* yt50@lafibm.lafayette.edu * || *** *** _\/_ ***** - TYTYALC ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Nov 93 10:48:03 PST From: sjs@netcom.com (Stephen Schow) Subject: XWING don't work! Well, I just installed my new GUS card and tried out my one and only game, XWING, and no sound at all. I do also have a demo version of Castle Wolfenstien that worked great with GUS, but XWING made no sounds at all. Now if anyone knows how to configure GUS, sbos or whatever to work with XWING, please lit me know....thanks in advance -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Schow | But you don't need to use the claw, if you sjs@netcom.com | pick the pear with the big paw paw......
