First off, with regards to Gabriel Knights you are right. Sierra chose to use the 32 bit protected mode AIL drivers. The bad news is that we can't get it to run with. The good news is that we will have new 32 bit drivers completed in about 3-4 weeks. This should alleviate a heck of a lot of problems with most 32 bit protected mode games (like Strike Commander) Also, we will be announcing and showing some new products at CES in the first week of January! Stay tuned for more info! I've recently installed a new s3 video card into my 386dx-40, and yesterday installed the Microsoft Mouse v2.0. I use a shareware program called Backmenu as my shell, and since I installed the s3 drivers, its startup screen has been garbled. I originally to a fault in the graphics drivers. After installing the mouse 2.0 drivers, windows startup kept giving me a "fault in the module grvultr.386, unable to start the ultrasound driver" message. The problem went away after I put the old mouse driver back, and I eventually tracked the problem down to the mousevkd.386 driver clashing with the Ultrasound driver. I now have the mouse installed, but using the old device=*vkd module. I also noticed that while the ultrasound driver was not working, the Backmenu startup was fine again. Just to let you know . A response would be welcome. Guess I'll have to d/load it and give it a go.... My question is this... just got the new mission disks (Over the Edge), installed and playing nicely (I love this game), but it still requires SBOS .... I do get digitized, but I'm curious how things would sound with native GUS... ? : Did we ever get a response from Nova Logic regarding GUS support? What was it? I probably missed that mesage. :) Please reply email if this is a waste of bw. Thanks! Before I start, I have seen the same compatibility problems that DOOM has with the GUS. But instead of just adding my complaints, I'd like to add some useful info for GUS'ers that have a Windows for Workgroups network. We all know that DOOM runs on a Novell network, right ? Well Windows for Workgroups comes with Novell network extensions that can make it compatible with a PC running Netware ! To enable these extensions, go into Control Panel, select the Networks icon, and click on the networks button. Select the Novell Network option, and click on Add. You will be prompted for Disk #8, which contains the IPX extensions for Novell, and copies of autoexec.bat, config.sys, and protocol.ini will be backed up since they will get modified. Now reboot your system, and WITHOUT starting Windows, run DOOM. Actually, run the SETUP program first to select Network play, and DOOM should load up and find a IPX network ! I'll try out some of the GUS fixes proposed today to get DOOM running with music and sfx. Thanks to this weekend's posters who already have id'ed some potential GUS fixes !! - Kirk P.S. Has anyone found out if modem head-to-head play is included in DOOM yet ?? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Dec 93 11:23:18 CST From: dalessio@calamite.cig.mot.com (Mario D'Alessio) Subject: Doom and GUS To all the people who state that Doom requires UltraMid: DOOM DOES NOT REQUIRE ULTRAMID!!! I get all music and sound FX without loading anything but the game. Just set your IRQ to 5 or 7 (I believe anything below 9 will work), and get the GUS fix that was posted in uuencoded form in volume 9, issue 12 of the GUS digest. Since I normally keep my GUS IRQ set to 11, I use a simple batch file to reset the IRQ and rerun ultrinit. I've tried calling every electronics warehouse that I am aware of (in Canada) but they don't have any. They say that they are on backorder, they are bought before they are even produced!! Bummer. Is there any way to get them through Gravis? I desperately need more RAM and am disappointed in the availability of these chips. 1Meg standard is a good idea, too bad I don't have it. **************************************** Tyler J. The music and sound effect are great during the menu screens, but once the game starts, nothing wants to work right. I've downloaded MEGA-EM and SBOS 3.60 and they won't work at all. If I use MEGA-EM, I can get Roland and Gen. Midi sound support. If I use either, I can get music and sound effects on the menu screens (although the effects are weird, such as a piano chord for a tackle on the main menu screen.) When I first start the game, the computer beeps as soon as the Dynamix prompt comes up. Then the music on the two opening screens is great. Once I try to play a game, though, the computer beeps when the NFLPA screen is up. Then the sound card goes silent. When I use SBOS 3.60, I can't do ANYTHING! As soon as I try to start anything, my computer locks up. With SBOS 2.08 (came with the GUS), I can get sound and music on the menu screens which sounds very good, and I can get realistic sound on the field. The only problem is a weird sound will come up often (about every minute, real-time). The first time it was an annoying and LOUD buzzer like the one on Family Feud. The second time I tried it, I got a weird set of chords. The first time it happened, it was not the airhorn, BTW, because the airhorn sounded while I was in the game, and it came though fine. It also happened after every time the crowd yelled. The noise was so loud, I had to put my earphones on my temples to make it bearable. I know that someone posted on here the way to fix it, but I've deleted most of my old journals. Could someone please E-Mail me the way to fix this? My address is: JHITCHEL@vaxc.stevens-tech.edu. Thanks! (BTW, I just d/led DOOM, I'm going to try it later. It looks good.) Now my problem is that when I load a midi file such as rhapsody in blue into recording session (its a fairly large .mid - about 100K I think) I get the little box that says converting/splitting/auto-notating, but after about a minute, I get a windows message that says that the application has caused a failure. Then it quits back into the program manager. What is the problem? I don't use windows that much so I have never messed much with memory settings or anything. My setup includes 486DLC-40 4 Meg RAM Qemm 6.02 windows 3.1 dos 6 GUS with 1Meg RAM Cirrus based video card (high color w/ 1Meg vram) Oh, yeah...I have another problem that isn't related to sound at all. Every since I got my video card, I haven't been able to use grasprt to view .gl files. I got the video card and monitor before the computer and can't remember trying to view them in my 286 with the cirrus video card. I have tried all kinds of config urations, but can't get any to work (they all freeze my computer). Does anyone have any suggestions or solutions? Are there any progs that will play .gl files besides grasprt? My PC is the centre of my MIDI network, but also gets used for the odd game. I decided to install Megaem, which would enable games that support Roland Sound Canvas or MT32 to use the Ultrasound. Next, I went into those games and changed the config from 'Soundblaster' to SCC or MT32 as appropriate. Later, my son came in and started Microprose's Formula 1 Grand Prix, but he didn't know about Megaem. 'Aha' thought the game, 'I think I'll send an MT32 sysex dump'. Unfortunately, I had a Roland D10 switched on, which immediately had it's voice memory overwritten. Fortunately, I was able to restore it from a recent sysex dump I had taken, but it was still a sobering lesson. It caused me to wonder how many other pieces of software behave in this way. Surely, the correct procedure would be: a. To warn that the voice data was about to be transmitted. and b. To do a handshake dump, so that it can check that the receiving device is correct, and enforce some manual intervention if hardware or software protection is set. I see in this digest that a lot of you don't know about the booboo ID made when packaging the DOOM zip file. They forgot to turn the GUS music back on before shipping things out. There is a patch/fix for this though. Thanks to David (Taylor) (from ID) for catching it and fixing it on the same day it was released. All you have to do is ftp to archive.epas.utoronto.ca, cd into pub/pc/ultrasound/submit, and mget doomgus.*. Yes, grab the .txt file too cause that contains instructions as well. Basically, 1) change your Ultrasound IRQ to less than or equal to 7. 2) put the dmxgus.ini file that's in the doomgus.zip file into your doom directory. Once you do that, run doom, let the demo run by itself and check out the awesome sound. Then see how far you can go before getting splattered into bits! :) Have fun!
