Right in the middle of a song, it made a loud sustained sound kind of like an air horn. It did this on two different mods, during one I even turned off all the channels and it still made the sound (I was using gusmod). I have never had this problem before and it didn't happen last night while playing playing mods. I recently upgraded to MS-DOS 6.0, have a 486-dlc40 with 4 megs RAM. I also recently changed my GUS settings to comply with DOOM (the irq is at 7 and the DMA's are at 5) Does anyone know what could have happened? I checked the 1MEG RAM with gusram and it checked out... BTW: Did anyone ever post an updated version of gusmod??? This is a limitation of the DOS extender that DOOM uses -- it just won't support the high IRQs. I suggest using settings of 5 and 7 for your GF1 and SB/MIDI IRQs, respectively. Create a DOOMGUS.BAT file that does the following set ultrasnd=220,1,1,5,7 ;use your own port and DMA settings ultrinit doom.exe set ultrasnd=220,1,1,12,5 ;return the GUS to its usual settings ultrinit Phat. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Dec 93 10:51:01 EST From: David Ball Subject: Doom SFX > Date: Mon, 20 Dec 93 12:38:30 EST > From: "Frank Pikelner" > Subject: Sound effects in doom - trouble > > I've installed and finished Doom over the weekend. As all of us here know, the music capabilities of the Gus are unbelievable. I would have paid a good deal more for it. Nevertheless, I kept my Soundblaster too (blasphemy!) hoping that it would be easier to use than SBOS and Megaem. And it has turned out that way. Getting them to work together hasn't been much trouble either. Of course, as I am writing this I am planning on attempting to use the SB for f/x and pump the midi through the gus. Anyway, I have the .PAT files for 808 drums and ANASYN3 off of EPAS so I got into ULTRAMID INI and changed the patch mappings to those files ( saving the original ULTRAMID.INI, of course!). I then go into Patch Manager under Windows. I noticed that the same sound names were there (Bright Acoustic Piano, etc..) but when I played the sounds they were the ANASYN3-ones that I had mapped in ULTRAMID.INI. Thinking about it, there's no way to indicate the *full name* of the patch in ULTRAMID.INI anyway, so where is the patch name coming from - do I have to change the names using MIDI MAPPER? Is there just one program or file I can use or change that will update both the patch file name as well as the full name? --Dave (dklash%sedofis@sed.bitnet) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Dec 1993 17:00:31 -0500 (EST) From: Mark Firoozfar Subject: Need .MOD and .MID players for windows. Hi everyone, I have a 486DX/33 with 8MB of RAM. I use MS WORD for windows and Visio to do a lot of my school projects. I like to be able to listen to music in the background since it relaxes me, and I love the sound of my GUS. Currently, I use the Midisoft Recording Session to play MID files, but MRS was not desinged to be a background .mid player, since it does not even loop through songs. Long time ago when I had an Amiga 500, I used a PD program called Multiplayer that allowed me to select a number of songs and then it would play them in-order, or randomly. Is there such a thing? Also, I need a similar tool for .MOD's and I have tried the one that was wrongly posted on c.s.i.p.s, but it was buggy and had a very choppy sound even on my 486DX/33. Any help is appreciated. I'd say that that is better support than I have _EVER_ seen from _ANY_ of the 150+ software and hardware vendors that I have ever worked with in my 10 years experience. Having this digest, and the attention that Gravis pays to it is a BONUS of having the card, definitely not typical. >Add to that the complete ignoring of several help requests mailed to >Gravis. Are you sure that your mail is even reaching Gravis? I know that several people that subscribe to the digest have reported not being able to reach Gravis. It seemed that the problem was found to be that the mail never even made it to them. You might want to check how many hops it takes to reach gravis.com. It might be more than your sendmail can handle. Personally, I have had several responses from Gravis. Yes, it took awhile for me to get my upgrade, but I found out that it was due to a change of address problem. Gravis downloaded their database for us to search for our names. I installed it with not a single problem. No, not one. I have since upgraded my computer, and still, nary a problem. Maybe its luck, maybe its just that I don't load every TSR known to mankind on bootup, who knows. All I know is that the GUS seems to me to be THE BEST SOUNDCARD AVAILABLE. As a side note, I was in the mall the other day, at Software Etc. and the salesman was trying to sell a soundcard to a kid who wanted to have MIDI support. Well, I grabbed the GUS box and said "This has better MIDI support and sound than any other card you will find anywhere". I told him the merits, and he seemed impressed. As I was leaving, I heard him talking to his friend, saying, "Cool, I'm getting this!". To which his friend replied, "I'll get my Mom to buy me one."
